Wood Mouse
Irish Name: | Luch fheir |
Scientific name: | Apodemus sylvaticus |
The wood mouse, also referred to as the long-tailed field mouse, is frequently confused with the only other resident mouse species in Ireland, the common house mouse.
Identification
Wood mice typically exhibit a dark brown coloration on their backs with a yellow to brown hue on their flanks and a greyish-white underbelly. Juveniles appear grey in color. The primary distinguishing characteristics between the two Irish mouse species include larger eyes, ears, and a significantly longer tail in wood mice. Additionally, their hind legs are proportionally larger, measuring up to 3cm in length relative to their body size.
