Leisler’s bats primarily inhabit woodlands but also occupy parklands and urban areas that meet all their habitat needs.
Identification
The Leisler’s bat is a medium-sized species and the largest bat found in Ireland. Adult head and body lengths can reach up to 7 cm, with a 4.5 cm tail. This bi-colored species features black to brown fur on the back and a yellowish underbelly, with long, shaggy fur on the back and shoulders. Their wings are long, narrow, and pointed, suited for fast flight, with black furred membranes and a wingspan up to 32 cm. In autumn, adults can weigh up to 20 grams, slimming down to 15 grams after emerging from winter hibernation.
