Greater Tussock Sedge
Irish Name: | Cíb thortógach |
Scientific name: | Carex paniculata |
Family Group: | Cyperaceae |
It thrives in fens, swamps, wet woodlands, and along lake, pond, and river edges, typically favoring base-rich environments. However, it tends to diminish in size and produce fewer fruits in shaded habitats.
Identification
It forms dense tussocks comprised of tall, triangular, dark-green stems, reaching up to 150cm in height. The over-wintering leaves are keeled with toothed margins, tapering to a three-angled tip. It bears a dense panicle of numerous spikelets, typically with male florets positioned above and female florets below. Occasionally, the male florets may be absent. The bracts are short or sometimes absent altogether.
